How to Fix a Running Toilet

Is your toilet running at random times? Does it sound like the toilet is running or flushing without being used?

A running toilet is typically caused by a malfunction in the toilet’s flushing mechanism or water tank. Here are some common reasons why a toilet may continue to run:

  1. Faulty Flapper Valve: The flapper valve is located at the bottom of the toilet tank and controls the flow of water into the bowl during flushing. If the flapper is not sealing properly or is worn out, water can leak from the tank into the bowl, causing the toilet to run continuously.
  2. Improperly Adjusted Fill Valve: The fill valve, also known as the ballcock or float valve, regulates the water level in the toilet tank. If the fill valve is set too high, the excess water will continuously flow into the overflow tube, leading to a running toilet.
  3. Float Ball or Float Cup Issue: Some toilets have a float ball attached to the fill valve, while others use a float cup. If these components are damaged or misaligned, they may not effectively control the water level in the tank, resulting in a running toilet.
  4. Defective Overflow Tube: The overflow tube prevents the tank from overflowing by directing excess water into the bowl. If the overflow tube is damaged or improperly positioned, water can flow into it continuously, causing the toilet to run.
  5. Mineral Buildup: Over time, minerals and debris can accumulate around the flushing mechanism, preventing proper sealing and causing a toilet to run. This is especially common in areas with hard water.
  6. Broken or Misaligned Handle: If the toilet handle or the mechanism inside the tank that connects it to the flapper is broken or misaligned, it can cause the flapper to remain open, leading to a running toilet.
  7. Water Pressure Issues: In some cases, high water pressure can cause a toilet to run continuously. Excessive pressure can prevent the flapper valve from closing properly or cause other parts to malfunction.

To diagnose and fix a running toilet, it is often necessary to inspect and potentially replace or adjust these components. If you’re not comfortable performing the repairs yourself, just give us a call!
