Trick or Treat: Plumbing and Heating Tips as Good as Candy

It’s October! Which means fall is here, and with it comes Halloween (and sometimes winter like weather in the Denver area). To help you get ready, we wanted to offer a few ‘tricks’ and treats in regards to your plumbing and heating, all without having to sort through your kid’s candy.

PLUMBING TRICK: 

If you haven’t done it already, unhook your garden hose before the first freeze. Because in Colorado, we don’t always know when this is, consider wrapping your hose bib (outdoor faucet) in a moving blanket, or insulate it with a pool noodle. This should protect it in the case of a freeze before you detach it. After the freeze, keep it unhooked and consider having a frost-free hose bib installed to prevent cracking or splitting. 

PLUMBING TREAT: 

Want a special treat? Plumbing can be more than just utilitarian. Water purifiers can improve water quality to reduce the use and cost of bottled water. Insta-hot faucets can produce on demand super- heated water for tea, coffee and other uses without the needed time to boil water. HEATING TRICK: 

Set a reminder to change batteries on your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms, and to replace furnace filters when you change your clocks for Daylight Savings. These are important and often overlooked maintenance habits that can save your life.

HEATING TREAT: 

Save money with a programmable thermostat. Never leave home with the heat cranked again! Program the thermostat to drop a few degrees at night when you don’t notice and when you are at work, and kick it up upon waking and returning.
