Frequently Asked Residential Air Conditioning Repair Questions

RESIDENTIAL AIR CONDITIONING REPAIR QUESTION #1:

How do I know if there is something wrong with my air conditioning?

Usually you know if there is a problem with your air conditioning if you experience:

  • a noticeable leak
  • a new noise
  • the air conditioning unit ‘freezes up’
  • the blowing air isn’t cold
  • it is turning off and on constantly
  • it hasn’t been serviced (tune-up or cleaning) in over a year
  • high energy bills (these can signify that the efficiency has dropped)
  • Air filter is dirty
  • Restricted air flow
  • The refrigerant is low
  • Leak in the refrigerant lines
  • Evaporative coil issues
  • Blower motor malfunctions

Regularly scheduled tune-ups and cleanings on an annual basis will help protect your air conditioning unit from most of these from becoming huge repairs. Many homeowners will use a discount plan, membership plan or early bird pricing to save money on annual inspections and cleanings to keep their systems in good working order.

RESIDENTIAL AIR CONDITIONING REPAIR QUESTION #2:

Do I have a warranty?

Many companies that offer installation of new units offer a warranty and will leave a magnet or sticker on the unit. Additionally, the manufacturer will also offer a limited warranty. The manufacture date is printed on a label on the outside of the unit, and if it is less than 5-7 years old, you likely still have an active warranty. Warranties can be different depending on the installer and the model. Your technician can help you determine if it is under warranty.

RESIDENTIAL AIR CONDITIONING REPAIR QUESTION #3:

I know I am supposed to change the air filter every month, but what kind of filter should I get?

The main thing to check is the filter’s Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value or MERV, which measures its effectiveness. The higher the MERV rating, the better the filter’s ability to keep your air conditioning unit from allowing contaminants into your air.

Fiberglass, pleated and polyester filters have a low MERV rating, and therefore aren’t recommended for high air quality. Choose a filter that has a MERV rating between 9-12 and is the right size for your specific unit. Your technician can make a recommendation.
