Creating a Comfortable Home for Visiting Guests

Well, the holiday season has kicked off with snow already arriving in the Denver area, preparing us for yet another Front Range winter. The holidays are a great time to reconnect with friends, family and co-workers, and this often means hosting them in your home. When it comes to comfort, there are several things you can do to make your guests feel welcome- here are a few of our favorites, both practical and fun.

Overall, guest comfort has a lot to do with air quality, temperature control, and making it easy to not mess stuff up.

Air Quality

When you walk into a home that smells of apple pie, it creates an automatic comfort. Taking this concept a bit further, consider having candles in the guest room, and place air fresheners in the bathrooms.

If your home tends to be dry, as many are in Colorado, consider having humidifiers available, or look at having a whole house humidifier installed. They can help with painful dryness, static, allergies, and even heating bills. Change your furnace filter and consider getting your ducts cleaned before guests arrive as well.

Temperature Control

Put any two people in a room and it seems one will always be cold and the other too hot. Check to make sure your thermostats are working and properly scheduled for temperature increases and decreases. Putting both a fan and extra blankets in the guest room will allow them to adjust for their needs without messing with your home’s temperature controls.

Heat lamps or heated towel racks are a luxurious touch to make your bathroom warmer and more welcoming. If you tend to run out of hot water, it may be time for a new water heater. Likewise, if your home doesn’t seem to be warming correctly, a new furnace or a tune-up may be the answer. Ease

When thinking about ease, think about what you would want if you were visiting rather than hosting. Looking at what hotels provide also gives a good glimpse into this point of view. In addition to candles and/or bathroom spray, we suggest a toilet plunger and extra roll of toilet paper be easily found in each bathroom. Consider a guest basket with fresh towels and travel size toiletries in case your guests have forgotten anything. A charging station, or easy access to electrical outlets is also a big plus.
